Volunteer

The Cancer Charity would not be able to raise half as much to help people with cancer if it were not for the dedication and commitment of our volunteers.

We are always looking for willing volunteers to help with our events and bucket collections.  If you can spare a few hours to help please Contact Us.
If you are thinking of volunteering your time to help us in the office or maybe as a volunteer driver please Contact Us.

We are also looking at the possibility of opening a Cancer Charity shop in Crookes.  If you would be interested in helping us to get this exciting project off the ground please Contact Us.

Our Volunteers

Norma BeresfordNorma Beresford

Every Tuesday come rain or shine you will find Norma Beresford helping with administrative work in our offices. She has clocked up a fantastic 10 years of service in all and so has contributed to so many achievements the Charity has been able to make – the Cancer Research Centre, the redevelopment of the Radiotherapy Department, the new Chemotherapy Suite and the Cancer Support Centre – to name but a few.

David BoothDavid Booth

David Booth gives a day of his week to help patients at Weston Park Hospital. Another long term volunteer, David dedicates half his day to looking after visitors to our Cancer Support Centre and the other half to delivering and gathering our collection boxes as a volunteer driver. We thank him for all that he does.

Michael Gaughan

Michael Gaughan is a lynch pin in our collection box operation.
Every Tuesday morning come rain or shine Michael cleans and prepares our blue collection boxes before they grace the counter tops across South Yorkshire and the North Midlands. He’s been doing this for over 5 years now – so that’s thousands of collection boxes that he’s prepared.
Always cheerful, Michael is also one of our stalwart drivers who you’ll no doubt meet if you display a collection box on our behalf.

Roy and Karen HaywoodRoy and Karen Haywood

Roy and Karen Haywood run our doorstep collection service.  Look out for a Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity collection bag coming through your door and please be sure that every penny raised comes straight to us here.

Dave HigginsDavid Higgins

Dave Higgins is Mr Wednesday in our calendar of volunteer drivers who buzz around the region collecting and delivering our collection boxes.

Sue HigginsSue Higgins

Whether it’s stuffing envelopes or putting our posters up around the hospital, Sue Higgins always graces our office with a smile and willingness to take on the most fiddly of things. Having an extra pair of creative hands about the office is invaluable.

Dave HinklesDave Hinkles

Dave is ‘Our Man in Mexborough’ and there’s nothing he doesn’t know about organising sponsored events and getting people involved. You will meet Dave if you sign up for our Sponsored Walk, Run or  5a-side Football tournament and he says if anyone is organising an event in the Mexborough area he is pleased to offer any help or advice he can.

Geoff HumphreysGeoff Humphreys

Geoff Humphreys popped into Weston Park Hospital six years ago to pick up a prescription for a relative and has been volunteering ever since. He started as a volunteer driver and now is the ‘brains’ behind our collection box scheme, co-ordinating the picking up and delivery of our charity tins to shop and pub counters around the region. As a recent past President of the Rotary Club of Hallam he organised a concert that raised £13,000 for the charity.

Val JonesVal Jones

Val Jones works tirelessly week in week out running her charity shop on Teynham Road, Shirecliffe in Sheffield.  A long time supporter of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, Val converted the family’s butchers shop and dedicated it to raising funds to help local people with cancer. With her loyal band of volunteers (and she’s looking for more) she has raised up to £48,000 for the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity over the past 9 years.

Eunice Plews and Joan LongmireJoan Longmire & Eunice Plews

From the nifty fingers of Joan Longmire and Eunice Plews have come the myriad of clever crafts that you find on sale around the hospital. To date they have raised over £8,000 and they keep coming up with more and more, little things to tickle our fancies. You will also find them every week in the hospital volunteering for our ‘Headways’ service which helps patients’ dealings with hair loss giving advice on scarves and turbans.  We must thank Atkinson’s in Sheffield for the support they give to Joan and Eunice and the patients at Weston Park Hospital.

Chris McIverChris  McIver

Chris McIver is a valued member of the team: “I have been a volunteer at the Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity for 6 years. My youngest son Russell was a patient here and I’m so grateful for the wonderful care and treatment he received. I work every Friday in the office doing anything which relieves the staff to do more important things.”

David MuscroftDavid Muscroft

I've been a professional photographer for 30-odd years, and realised that it was all that time since I'd been a patient at Weston Park, and that I'd be glad to offer my services.

I'm now having a challenging and rewarding time taking pictures of charming patients and marvellous staff.

Val SmithVal Smith

Val Smith started volunteering at home; knitting little chicks for Easter and stockings for Christmas. That was more than 15 years ago. Since then she has become a familiar face in the WRVS shop, at our events like the Dragon Boat Regatta and our sponsored Walk. Val is always at the ready to step in and lend a hand where ever it is needed. We thank her on behalf of all the patients and staff at Weston Park Hospital.

Trudi WatsonTrudi Watson

Trudi Watson has been raising money for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity in Rawmarsh for more than 13 years. Her ‘Friends of Weston Park’ charity shop on Bellows Road and the regular fundraising events she organised through the Dale Road Peoples Centre have contributed more than £225,000 over the years which we think is a truly outstanding achievement.  We thank her on behalf of all the patients at Weston Park Hospital.

David WoodsDavid Woods

Our newest recruit to our band of volunteer drivers is David Woods from Sheffield. You’ll see him buzzing around the region in our little charity car delivering and picking up our collection boxes – usually on a Thursday.
